Packaging Performance Academy

Fix the packaging decision before it gets expensive.

Coaching for Marketing, Brand and Procurement teams who approve packaging without knowing what actually happens on the production floor. Built on 10+ years of hands-on flexo printing, design, materials and QC.

The problem

Packaging fails before it's printed.

Packaging failures rarely happen in production. They happen earlier — when marketing, brand, and procurement teams make packaging decisions without understanding the production, cost, and risk consequences.

The result: reprints, write-offs, missed launch dates, retailer penalties, and avoidable cost. Often six figures of waste per year, traced back to a single decision made in week one.

The solution

Production knowledge translated for decision-makers.

The Packaging Performance Academy is a coaching programme run under the Top Flight Packaging brand. It takes a decade of hands-on production experience — flexo, design, materials, QC — and turns it into practical guidance for the people who actually approve packaging spec, spend and suppliers.

We don't train operators. We train the people whose decisions create the problems operators get blamed for.

What makes us different

Three things, deliberately.

01

Decision-focused, not technical

Built for the people who approve packaging, not the people who produce it. We translate production reality into language commercial decision-makers can actually use.

02

Coaching-led, not classroom

Experience-based guidance grounded in real production knowledge. Not slide decks, not theory. The conversations and frameworks that change how your team buys packaging.

03

Real-world outcomes

Focused on consequences, trade-offs, and what actually happens when things go wrong. South Africa-specific: SA recycling infrastructure, SA distribution, SA supplier dynamics.

Meet the trainer

Cameron Manning.

Ten-plus years in the South African packaging industry — from the flexo press through artwork and substrates through QC.

Cameron has worked on the manufacturer side and on the buyer side, which means he knows where suppliers play games and where buyers leave money on the table. He runs the brokerage at Top Flight Packaging in parallel with the Packaging Performance Academy, so the coaching draws on current market intelligence, real supplier relationships and live problems being solved every week.

He built the Academy because most packaging mistakes are decision problems made by people who never get exposed to production reality. The course is the thing he wishes the best buyers he's worked with had been able to take ten years earlier.

Experience

Where the experience came from

  • Flexo printing across corrugated, flexible and labels
  • Packaging design and artwork sign-off
  • Materials and substrate selection — paper, board, films, laminates
  • Quality control across short runs and high-volume production
  • Both manufacturer-side and buyer-side perspective
  • South Africa-specific market and supplier dynamics
The proprietary framework

The Packaging Decision Lifecycle™

Every packaging project moves through 8 stages from concept to retail. At each stage, decisions are made — and someone influences them. The lifecycle is a loop, not a line. Problems at stage 7 almost always trace back to decisions at stage 2 or 3.

01

Concept & brief

Where the project gets defined.

02

Design & artwork

Format, structure, dieline.

03

Materials & substrate

Films, papers, board, laminates.

04

Print process

Flexo, gravure, litho, digital.

05

Production & QA

Make-ready, run, in-line checks.

06

Finishing & conversion

Laminates, coatings, die-cut, seals.

07

Logistics & delivery

Transport, warehousing, retail pack.

08

Retail performance

Shelf, e-commerce, returns, brand equity.

↻ Stage 8 feeds back into stage 1. Every project teaches the next.

What your team gains

Print-literate decision-makers.

The point isn't to make your team into printers. It's to make them confident, informed buyers — people who ask the right questions and know when an answer doesn't add up.

  • A lifecycle checklist your team applies to every future packaging project
  • The confidence to brief suppliers clearly and challenge assumptions
  • Knowing which decisions are expensive to get wrong — and when to make them
  • Fewer reprints, fewer write-offs, fewer avoidable costs
  • Production-grounded vocabulary that gets you taken seriously by suppliers
  • One avoided packaging mistake typically pays for the entire workshop
